Vestas has secured a 55MW order from renewable energy developer RENOVA| Inc. for the Reihoku Amakusa Onshore Wind project in Kumamoto prefecture| Japan.

Vestas has secured a 55MW order from renewable energy developer RENOVA, Inc. for the Reihoku Amakusa Onshore Wind project in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan.

As part of the order, Vestas will supply thirteen V117-4.2MW wind turbines to the project. The order will also include a 20-year service agreement to keep the wind farm performing optimally.

The turbines will be installed with a high-tower solution with 112-meter hub heights in order to unlock new wind resources at higher and more consistent wind speeds.

Purvin Patel, President of Vestas Asia Pacific said in a statement, “We are delighted to once again partner with RENOVA. This will be our first collaboration in Japan, building upon the success of our previous three projects in Vietnam.”

Turbine delivery will begin in the fourth quarter of 2024, with commissioning scheduled for completion in 2026.

The Reihoku project has resulted from the formation of Reihoku Wind Power G.K.Co. Ltd. - a collaboration between Kumamoto Prefecture and Reihoku Town.

According to the Asia Wind Energy Association, wind power generates a small but increasing proportion of Japan’s electricity.

Ever since the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, wind is increasingly seen as a safer and more reliable alternative. The Association notes that none of Japan’s commercial wind turbines, totaling over 2,300MW, failed as a result of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, including the Kamisu offshore wind farm directly hit by the tsunami.
