Storage INNOvations for Green ENErgy Systems

SINNOGENES (Storage INNOvations for Green ENErgy Systems) is a Horizon Europe Innovation Action aiming to accelerate the integration of renewable energy into Europe’s energy systems through the combination of advanced digital intelligence and energy storage technologies. The project brings together 27 partners from across Europe, working over 48 months to deliver scalable, interoperable, and policy-aligned innovations for green energy transitions.

At the core of SINNOGENES is the SINNO Energy Toolkit, which is a suite of digital tools that includes, among others, AI-based forecasting, energy management systems, flexibility optimization tools, simulation environments, and digital twins. These tools are designed to support smarter planning, control, and operation of multi-energy systems with high renewable penetration.

To facilitate end-user interaction with these tools, the SINNO platform (UI) and middleware layer provide a unified access point for data exchange and service delivery. This infrastructure ensures smooth integration with system operators and stakeholders, allowing seamless realisation of flexibility and optimisation services based on real-time and forecasted data.

While the Toolkit is focused on software intelligence, SINNOGENES also integrates a wide range of innovative physical storage technologies within its pilot sites, such as lithium-ion and redox flow

The project has recently transitioned from the development phase to real-world demonstration, with its solutions being deployed across six pilot sites in Portugal, Spain, Germany, Greece, and Switzerland. These covers use cases such as industrial microgrids, district heating, islanded operation, hydrogen mobility, and energy communities.

In parallel, SINNOGENES also works on market mechanisms, regulatory enablers, and stakeholder engagement to ensure broad adoption and sustainability. Through this integrated and systemic approach, the project contributes significantly to the EU’s goal of a decarbonized, flexible, and resilient energy system.
