Horizon Europe: Five next-gen data projects
Ensuring fairness in the digital environment is a necessity. And it seems like the way to achieve this is through EU-funded data projects.

Ensuring fairness in the digital environment is a necessity. So is making data accessible for all Europeans. It seems like the way to achieve this is through EU-funded data projects.
In addition, the so-called Data Act, adopted by the European Commission on the 23rd of February 2022 is the way to ensure both fairness and accessibility.
Indeed, the Data Act will make data available and benefit companies, individuals and public administrations.
To achieve that, a set of measures was constructed. Firstly, measures to increase legal certainty for companies and consumers. Secondly, measures to prevent abuse of contractual imbalances that hinder fair data sharing.
Thirdly, measures for the public sector bodies to access and use data held by the private sector that are necessary for specific public interest purposes.
And finally, measures to set the right framework conditions for customers to effectively switch between different providers. That will help unlock the EU cloud market.
The following EU-funded projects will focus on solving the data "puzzle" and assisting the energy transition.
AUTO-DAN
This EU-funded project's focus is to optimize the operational performance of small and medium size buildings.
To achieve that, AUTO-DAN relies on three pillars: data analytics, an interoperable hardware/software architecture and a self-energy assessment methodology.
What the project produces is a cost-effective technological solution for the self-assessment of the actual energy performance of buildings. The same goes for the products (smart appliances for example) which use energy in buildings.
BD4NRG
By unlocking the potential of big data, this project enables improved operation for all stakeholders in the energy value chain.
To achieve that, BD4NRG partners will develop, adapt and deploy a distributed big data energy analytics framework.
This EU-funded project will combine DLTs/blockchain technologies with edge processing, Federated Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, to operate the data-driven energy ecosystem.
Also, and that is of truly big importance, it will make extensive adoption of open sources technology components and tools and Open APIs.
BEYOND
The aim of this EU-funded project is to design a novel Big Data reference architecture and platform powered by buildings’ data.
BEYOND will then help data consumers search, find and utilize data generated by buildings. This way they can run analytics and simulations to optimize operation and energy performance.
The BEYOND project is a next-generation Big Data Platform and AI Analytics Toolkit for (data sharing-based) Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) applications for all relevant stakeholders.

D^2EPC
Setting the ground for the next-gen of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for buildings is the aim of this EU-funded project.
D^2EPC proposes a framework that sets its foundations on the data collection infrastructure and management systems of buildings.
It uses operational data and adopts the ‘digital twin’ concept to advance building information modelling and calculate energy usage.
EERAdata
This data-focussed project is funded by the EU Commission and headed by the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA).
EERA is a membership-based, non-profit association that brings together 250 universities and public research centres in 30 countries.
The EERAdata project will develop an open data ecosystem in the low carbon energy field. It will also create an open platform for access to energy data for experts and consumers alike.
