Five new agreements with leading companies in Italy across key sectors such as chemicals, manufacturing and food and beverages has led to Iberdrola reaching 5MWh of electricity sold in the country through long-term clean power purchase agreements.

Iberdrola said the electricity supplied under these agreements is supported by 90MW of new photovoltaic capacity on the Italian peninsula.

The PPAs have been signed under the Energy Release 2.0 mechanism, promoted by Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security.

The aim is to accelerate the deployment of new indigenous renewable capacity and offering the industrial fabric with high energy needs a stable and competitive supply in a context of increasing volatility, in addition to contributing to the decarbonisation of their production processes.

Iberdrola said in a statement: “In this way, Iberdrola – the largest electricity company in Europe and one of the two largest in the world by market capitalisation – continues to expand its portfolio of long-term power purchase agreements and consolidates its position as a strategic industrial partner also in Italy.

“On the other hand, the transaction highlights the group's ability to promote the Italian business fabric, collaborate with institutions and operate within mechanisms such as Energy Release 2.0, which integrate electrification, industry and decarbonisation.”

Importance of shared ambition in Europe

Last year, in an Enlit exclusive, Agustín Delgado Martín, Iberdrola’s Global Director of Technology, Environment and Quality, emphasised that shared ambition becomes collaborative action when Europe adopts a holistic approach and ensures alignment across all strategies, not only energy, but also digitalisation, innovation, and industry.

Europe’s energy transition will only succeed if ambition is matched by concrete steps, said Martin.

“In a global environment marked by technological acceleration and the energy transition, technological innovation and digital transformation allow the company to anticipate sector challenges, optimise processes, and deliver high-value solutions to customers, employees, and partners.

“This is how we transform words into action and accelerate the real implementation of innovative solutions,” he said.

At Enlit Europe 2025, Eva Mancera, CEO of i-DE Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes Iberdrola, warned that without faster investment, climate and industrial goals could stall.

She said Europe’s transition to electrification is moving slower than needed to meet decarbonisation targets.

“Electricity still represents only slightly above 20% of total final energy consumption in the EU a figure that has barely changed in the last decade.”

She emphasised that accelerating electrification is not just about climate. It's a strategic opportunity for industry and innovation.

“Grids are more than infrastructure. They act as powerful economic drivers,” Mancera said, highlighting their role in fostering investment, high-value jobs, and industrial growth, positioning grids as a cornerstone for competitiveness and sustainable growth.

Iberdrola leads PPA pack in Europe

According to the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2026 report, Iberdrola leads the European PPA market for the third consecutive year, and has agreements, backed by a broad portfolio of wind generation – onshore and offshore – and photovoltaic, as well as a  diversified generation mix, in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, the UK, the US, Brazil and Australia.

These agreements are part of Iberdrola's strategy to promote the electrification of industry, strengthen stable relationships with large customers and contribute to a safer, self-sufficient, competitive and sustainable energy system, prepared to respond to growth in demand.
