Horizon Europe: Five EU projects made in Germany

Germany may be facing severe difficulties due to its dependence on Russian gas, but the country's involvement in energy projects is huge.
Germany may be facing severe difficulties due to its dependence on Russian gas, but the country's involvement in energy projects is huge and it just might be the answer to its problems.
For starters, Germany participates in two out of three EU-funded renewable energy cross-border projects (CB RES). These projects are part of the first list of projects eligible for funding from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme.
The two projects are:
- a cross-border district heating grid based on RES between Germany and Poland.
- a project to produce renewable electricity in Italy, Spain and Germany for conversion, transport and use of green hydrogen in the Netherlands and Germany.
The three projects selected today are only the beginning: we are accelerating the deployment of renewable energy across the EU and moving towards a more collaborative approach as we do so. The full potential for green transition and decarbonisation of the EU can only be realised through joint efforts across all sectors, technologies and regions.
In addition, the EU Commission recently approved a German scheme to partially compensate energy-intensive companies for higher electricity prices resulting from indirect emission costs under the EU Emission Trading System (‘ETS').
And of course, there is always Horizon Europe. The following are EU-funded projects that are in some shape and form "made in Germany".
3beLiEVe
A consortium of 21 partners from 10 different countries, including Germany, participate in this project.
3beLiEVe aims to strengthen the position of the European battery and automotive industry.
It will accomplish that by delivering the next generation of battery cells, designed and made in Europe, for the electrified vehicles market of 2025 and beyond.

EnerMan
Yet another consortium that is composed of 10 different countries, including Germany.
The first objective of EnerMan is to design an intelligent, autonomous, flexible and reconfigurable closed control loop manager that constantly adapts the manufacturing processes, product lines and equipment functionality
That, in order to always comply with operator determined energy sustainability indicators.
MefHySto
Inspired by Goethe's Faust, at least in the name, this project focuses on storage.
MefHySto addresses the need of large-scale energy storage, which is required for a shift to renewable energy supply.
The project is funded by the European Metrology Programme on Innovation and Research (EMPIR) and consists of 14 consortium partners from all over Europe.
NESOI
This project focuses on optimizing new energy solutions for islands and is open to a community of 2400 inhabited EU islands
The European Islands Facility, NESOI, aims to fund 60 successful energy transition projects. It will mobilize more than €100m of investment and reducing significantly CO2 and GHG emissions by 2023.
It also plans to facilitate the clean energy transition on EU islands from the bottom up, providing training, technical support, cooperation opportunities and robust funding opportunities.
procuRE
This project unites 6 procurers from 6 different countries, together responsible for over 21.000 public buildings.
The aim of procuRE is to achieve 100% renewable energy supply in existing stock.
The relevant solutions are to be incentivised via Pre-commercial Procurement (PCP) in the building sector.
