The DSO Entity and ENTSO-E have launched a technopedia platform to showcase technologies that can improve the efficiency, stability, security and resilience of the electricity grids.

The implementation of the technopedia, one of the tasks set out in the European Commission’s grids action plan, is intended to increase the visibility of grid technologies currently available to DSOs and TSOs with detailed descriptions on them, along with use cases and deployments from across the continent.

With this system operators should be able to explore how others are leveraging the various technologies, sharing good practices, and to adopt similar solutions in their own grids.

In this first phase the intention is to solicit contributions from stakeholders, with a selection of key technologies identified as the initial areas of focus.

For DSO and TSO relevant technologies, these are:

  • Dynamic line rating
  • AC power transformers (with tap charger)
  • Asset management, tools, and procedures
  • Digital twins
  • High-temperature superconductor cables
  • Voltage source converters
  • Digital fault recorders
  • Circuit breakers - AC
  • Static synchronous series compensators
  • Software-defined security.

For DSO only relevant technologies, this is:

  • Digital (secondary) substations.

The closing date for applications is 30 June 2025 and these will then be subject to review with the aim to publish on the technopedia website in December 2025.

The DSO Entity and ENTSO-E will act as moderators of the platform and plan one publication cycle per year.

This will include a review of TSO only relevant technologies, which are not included in the 2025 list above due to publication in the dedicated ENTSO-E technopedia in March 2025.

These are expected to be published on the DSO-TSO technopedia in the future, which will ensure that it becomes a single, valuable source of information for the region and beyond.
