Energy Transitions podcast: How to create a competitive metals industry in Europe
In this Energy Transitions podcast, Adina Georgescu of Eurometaux, calls for lower electricity prices to ensure Europe's metals sector can compete on a global stage.
Europe’s metals sector, more specifically the non-ferrous metals sector, is under immense pressure to decarbonise while remaining globally competitive.
One of the key challenges, according to Adina Georgescu, Energy & Climate Change Director at Eurometaux, is high electricity prices, which are pushing the sector beyond what it’s capable of. According to Georgescu: “We just need to be pragmatic in Europe and accept that you need to take some good, strong decisions when it comes to achieving globally competitive prices.”
She is also calling on policymakers to support the creation of a sustainable metals value chain towards achieving greater strategic autonomy.
In this episode, you will learn more about:
- The importance of non-ferrous metals for the energy transition;
- The link between a sustainable metals value chain and greater strategic autonomy;
- How high electricity prices have impacted Europe's metals industry;
- How the metals sector is tracking on its decarbonisation goals;
- What is needed from policymakers to ensure Europe can remain globally competitive;
- Which technologies and solutions offer the most promise to decarbonise the sector.
